Mothers. What a shame that they're only celebrated on Mother's Day, when they should be celebrated each and every day! As a mother myself, it's not that I want flowers and chocolates every day (well, actually that would be kind of nice). I look instead, for "proof" that my mothering skills are paying off.

Being a mother means to be a leader. For a long time I looked to other women who are powerful leaders - CEO's, corporate dynamos, and rock star non-profit presidents with envy. THEY are leaders, I would think. And they certainly are.

But then, so aren't moms? They lead each and every minute of the day. They lead with action, showing their children what to eat and what not, organizing their study schedules, tying their shoes, and responding to their cries. They also lead with conviction, taking them to a church or a mosque or a temple, making sure they've said their prayers, and blessed their food. They also lead by example, working hard each and every day and putting in hours of work to make the home run like a well-oiled (no pun intended) machine. Laundry doesn't do itself, and food certainly doesn't cook by itself.

I still envy the women entrepreneurs or corporate dynamos who are also moms. I simply don't know how they do it. But at the end of the day, whether we're leading companies or charities or causes or children, the method of leadership we're applying is often the same. We're in CREATION mode. Creating businesses, work flows, fundraisers or creating healthy eating micro-habits or study habits. It's part of the same leadership skills we possess.

Our power is enormous. We create kids who will either be resilient in the face of challenge - or falter. We create empowered kids who will pursue their dreams - or not. We create kids who can learn to forgive or learn to hate. We often create the every day atmosphere of our homes - either by yelling and fighting, or being grounded and actively listening. All the while, we are creating leaders of the future.

Strong leaders are healthy leaders. Sure, at any stage of leadership we can burn out. But what do we come back to? What we learned when we were young. I believe that we have to start early when we teach our children about wellness. As they grow up, habits set in which can be very hard to change.

What the mother does, often kids will follow. This morning we rubbed a concoction of basil, rosemary and peppermint essential oils on the bottom of their feet for energy, focus and clarity. Last night we made golden milk with turmeric and raw honey and almonds to help them cope as they studied late into the night. They've learned by osmosis at this point!

And yet at the end of the day, it doesn't matter when your kids learn about wellness habits, as long as they do. As moms, it takes a whole lot of energy to begin that process, but it's the one thing worth investing into.....adopting wellness now in order to avoid illness later. Mom's have the power not just to "impact" lives and households, but to make or break them. Our gift lies in knowing how to wield that power, for the benefit of generations to come.
